Fencers to watch at Paris 2024

French fencers will be trying to shine at Paris 2024 because the forthcoming Olympic Games will be held on home territory. Romaine Cannoned, who won gold at Tokyo 2020, will be attempting to retain his position after winning the world championships and leading France's men's epée team to victory at the 2022 FIE World Fencing Championships in Cairo, Egypt.

However, the French men's epée squad will face obstacles from both the defending Olympic champions, Japan, and the perennial favourite, Italy. After losing to Cheung Ka Long of Hong Kong, China in the final at Tokyo 2020, current world number one in foil Tomaso Marini of Italy will be vying for the gold.

After successfully earning their fourth consecutive world title this year in Cairo, Republic of Korea will fight for a third gold in men's team sabre in Paris 2024. France's Ysaora Thibus won the gold medal in the women's foil discipline, adding to her Tokyo 2020 team foil silver at the 2022 World Championships. At her home Olympics, the 31-year-old will strive for the top spot on the podium.

Republic of Korea, the 2022 women's team epée champions, will also be vying for the gold medal at the Grand Palais, but Italy, the 2016 Olympic bronze medalists, who are now ranked second in the world, will be a tough opponent.
