Track cycling is one of the quickest Olympic sports, and titles can sometimes be decided by just a few seconds in some competitions. Paris 2024 will host a total of 12 track cycling competitions (six for men and six for women), which is exactly the same as Tokyo 2020. 95 athletes, 95 each for the male and female genders, will compete in Paris.

How many track cyclists will compete at Paris 2024?

Paris 2024 will include 190 track cyclists competing, with an equal number of men and women (95 per gender). Every cyclist must follow the same road in order to compete in the Games because there are no host country quota or universality places.

The NOCs are given quotas in the case of track cycling. The NOCs or National Federations choose the athletes who will compete at the Games after the qualification phase. The maximum quota per NOC is theoretically 14 (seven for each gender), allocated as follows:

In sprint and keirin, there are two athletes per gender.

  • One omnium competitor per gender
  • In team pursuit, one team (composed of four athletes) per gender
  • 3 athletes per team, by gender, in the team sprint.
  • Madison only allows two athletes each squad.

There may be instances where 16 competitors from a NOC compete in track cycling. If this/these athlete(s) have entered in a different cycling discipline, a maximum of one athlete per gender (two in total) per NOC may be added to the list. Athletes from other cycling disciplines may participate in track cycling competitions if their NOC has secured a quota spot in the event, as long as the NOC and event participation caps are not exceeded and the athlete eligibility standards are satisfied.

What is the qualification process for track cycling at Paris 2024?

The UCI Track Olympic Ranking 2022–2024 is the only way for the 190 cyclists to qualify for track cycling competitions. For each of the sport’s events, a special UCI Track Olympic ranking by nations for 2023–2024 is generated. Athletes will need to accrue points in order to qualify. Some of the things to consider are as follows:

Events

The points earned in the following competitions will be added up for each UCI Track Olympic Ranking between 2022 and 2024:

·         The previous two corresponding Continental Championships.

·         The top two finishes in the 2023 and 2024 seasons of the UCI Track Nations Cup.

·         The UCI World Track Championships in 2023.

Points scales

The points earned in these competitions have different values. Points will be multiplied by each scale in the UCI Track Olympic Ranking 2022–2024, with the exception of the The ranking of any other cyclists will not be taken into account because only one athlete/team per NOC is taken into account at each competition. For instance, if two British teams or riders are rated first and second, the third-placed NOC will receive the points for the second British team.

·         Points from the Nations Cups will not change. The scale is as follows for both the Continental Championships and the World Championship:

·         Points from the Continental Championships are doubled by 0.75.

·         1.5 times the World Championship points are applied.

Number of athletes/teams

There may be several athletes from the same NOC competing in an event who do not receive points for their NOC because quotas are for NOCs rather than specific athletes. Only the best athlete from a particular NOC will receive points for his or her NOC for the relevant ranking in each individual competition, and only the best team from a particular NOC will receive points for each team competition.

Points allocation

Features of each ranking

The eight NOCs with the highest rankings will each qualify a team of three competitors for the team sprint (24 quotas, total of 8 teams).

Sprint and keirin (7 sprint + 7 keirin): The seven NOCs with the top rankings in each event that do not have a team sprint quota will qualify for one quota spot in that event. Sprint requires that the minimum allotment per continent be adhered to (see “Special Provisions” below)*.

One athlete from each of the top seven NOCs in the sprint will be allowed to compete in the keirin, and vice versa. Without a separate quota in both situations. The right to enter two athletes in each sprint and keirin event belongs to NOCs that have already qualified for team sprint, with the following considerations. The chosen athletes must already be registered for and qualified for another cycling discipline or track event.

Each NOC’s quota for each event must be honored.

The overall number of participants competing in the sprint and keirin events could exceed 30 athletes, taking into consideration all of the aforementioned factors. The 10 NOCs with the highest rankings will each qualify a team of four competitors for the team pursuit event (40 quotas, 10 teams).

The five highest-ranked NOCs that have not yet qualified any quota places in team pursuit will each qualify a team made up of two athletes. Madison (10 quotas, total of five teams). Given that the chosen athletes must already be qualified for and registered in another track event or another cycling discipline, NOCs who have qualified for team pursuit are allowed to enter one team (two cyclists) in Madison.

Each NOC’s quota for each event must be honored.

That means that the maximum number of teams competing in Madison might be 15. Omnium (seven quota spots): The top seven NOCs who have not already directly qualified for any quota spaces in Madison will each qualify for one quota place while adhering to the minimum allotment per continent (see below in “Special Provisions”).

The NOCs that qualified in Madison are allowed to enter one cyclist in the omnium, but only if that athlete is also qualified for and registered in another cycling discipline or track event. Each NOC’s quota for each event must be honored. Accordingly, the normal athlete limit for omnium competitors might be up to 22.

Side note: The connections between the events

The NOC in question must confirm the participation in the first event in order to receive an automatic spot in the second (or third) event when the qualification of a first event is linked to a potential qualification for a second event (as is the case with team sprint to sprint and keirin, team pursuit to Madison, and team pursuit or Madison to omnium).

The NOC still has the chance to earn quota spots for the second (or third) event through the regular qualifying process if it does not confirm its participation in the first event (the specific Olympic ranking for that event).

Special Provisions: continents representatives

Track cycling does not have universality quotas, however that does not preclude the participation of NOCs from every continent. There are two particular provisions to consider in order to ensure that:

If a continent is underrepresented in any of the sprint-type events—team sprint, sprint, or keirin—the highest NOC from that continent in the Olympic sprint rankings will receive one quota spot for the sprint event. In the reverse sequence of the latter, each such allocation will result in a proportional deduction (maximum one per NOC) of spots awarded to NOCs through the Olympic sprint ranking.

If a continent is underrepresented in team pursuit, Madison, or omnium events for either gender, that continent’s highest NOC in the Olympic omnium ranking will get a quota spot in the omnium event. Any such allocation will have a commensurate reduction (maximum one per NOC) in the number of spots given to NOCs through the Olympic omnium ranking, in the opposite order of the latter.
