Carter Baker, 17, competes in high diving Dec. 3, 4 at FINA World Junior Diving Championship. Fifteen meters might not sound like much. For Carter Baker, a 17-year-old South Surrey resident, flipping and twisting and turning off towers as high as a five-story building is fun. According to the FINA website, "These athletes will make up the majority of the competitive field at both the 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games.

“I’ve trained my mind not to think about the height, but in all honesty it doesn’t scare me that much, “Baker said.

“If the choice was mine I would be competing higher than 15 meters.”

The local adolescent is getting ready to compete at the FINA World Junior Diving Championships, which are taking place in Montreal till December 4 after winning the first junior Canadian National High Diving championships.

According to SSWR Divers coach Gregory Cox, he will be diving off a 15-meter platform at the Worlds competition, launching himself from a catwalk into the ocean below. As of right now, a back double with three twists is Baker's most difficult dive.

It will be one of the toughest dives performed in my event, if not the hardest dive, according to Baker. Baker transitioned from competitive gymnastics to diving with South Surrey White Rock Divers five years ago.

He soon started participating at the provincial and national levels in the Olympic-style 10-meter platform and three-meter springboard diving. According to Baker's instructor Igor Kopecky, he has now had quick success in the new discipline of high diving. He truly possesses a cat-like ability to always be aware of his whereabouts in the air, according to Kopecky.

"When he climbs higher, it lessens his dread... Because of how quickly his lithe system and orientation assimilate information, he can almost immediately tell if something feels amiss during takeoff or when in the flight.

Baker races Dec. 3 and 4, and Kopecky is enthusiastic about the upcoming competition and reports that the preparation is going well. I believe he will do admirably on the global stage. He's a skilled rival.

Three-time Olympic diver Beverly Boys founded South Surrey White Rock Divers in 1994. Divers at the club range in age from five to 91. Divers compete in local, national, and worldwide contests through their wide range of programmers. Gridley and Foley win the Olympic Trial cuts, and the Blue Devils win the Toyota U.S. Open on the final day.

 

NC: GREENSBORO the third day of the 2022 Toyota U.S. Open at the Greensboro Aquatic Center was concluded by Duke swimming and diving. During the day three prelims, freshman Kaelyn Gridley and junior Sarah Foley both achieved 2024 U.S. Olympic Trial times. Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana will host the Olympic Trials from June 15–23, 2024.

HOW IT HAPPENED

•  Kaelyn Gridley, a freshman, qualified for the finals on Friday night by swimming the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:08.69. The native of Wilmette, Illinois, qualified for the Olympic trials thanks to her quick pace.
• Gridley swam a time of 1:08.46 to place second behind Irish swimmer Mona McSharry in the 100-meter breaststroke finals.
• With her second-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke, Gridley is crowned the 18 and under US Champion. In addition, she was the fastest American in the competition, coming in second to Mona McSharry of Ireland.
•  Sarah Foley, a junior, joined Gridley after qualifying for the finals in the 100-meter breaststroke event at the Olympic trials with a timing of 1:10.24. With a time of 2:01.36, Foley placed eighth in the 200-meter freestyle as well.
• With a timing of 4:56.72, freshman Audrey Portello placed 15th in the 400-meter individual medley on Friday.
• Martina Perini, a freshman, placed 18th in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:00.79, a 1.08-second season-low.

Moving closer to hosting the 2024 Olympic Diving Trials is Morgantown.

MONTGOMERY, W.Va. The Olympic Diving Trials in 2024 will be held in one of two finalists, the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown. In an interview with WAJR's "Talk of the Town" on Thursday, Monongalia County Tom Bloom remarked, "We were astonished that we submitted it and were told we are one of two finalists."

A team from Mylan Park, the Monongalia County Commission, local governments, West Virginia University, WVU Hospital, the West Virginia Department of Tourism, and the Visit Mountaineer Country Convention and Visitors Bureau (VMCCVB) put together the application, which ordinarily takes up to six months to complete.
