The team finished with a final score of 100.3 behind the German team who took gold with a 95.2. New Zealand followed closely in third with a combined total of 100.7. Led by Chef D’Equipe Bobby Costello, the team stayed composed and focused as the technical track designed by Uliano Vezzani (ITA) proved challenging with rails coming down throughout the course.
The top 25 combinations finished the day at the conclusion, and the last phase had a significant impact on the team standings, making for an exciting championship finale. On the grass field at Centro Equestre Federal, all five American combinations that competed in the first round of competition yesterday were among the top 25.
Costello focused on the effort and dedication put forth by the athletes, their staff, the owners, and the entire support crew to generate a historic outcome for the United States regarding the team’s performance.
“The day was just so hectic. When I walked the course, I had a hunch it would have a big impact. I had never seen a track with three lines, all single jumps to combinations, at three completely different lengths, and that was consistently big and challenging. No team escaped unhurt during this crucial stage, therefore you had to persevere until the last end, according to Costello.
“I’m hoping this is a sign of great things to come. I believe there was still something lacking even though the program had been on the slow burn of the swing for a few years. When I took this interim post, trying to change the culture and making sure that everyone had each other’s backs, and developing trust among the riders was my first objective, he continued.
“The riders, the owners, the staff, people have never given up on the sport. I’m very glad for everyone, even those at home who get to watch and get to be proud.
Off The Record, a 2009 Irish Sport Horse gelding owned by The Off The Record Syndicate, showed his scope, readability, and talent by producing the team’s lone clear round. Will Coleman and Off the Record handled the questions posed throughout the challenging course with grace?
The couple took seventh place overall with a score of 27.2 to end as the highest-placed American team. Coleman bought the gelding when he was four years old, raised him throughout his career, and said he continues to be proud of the advancements and successes of their collaboration.
It was fantastic. I’m overjoyed. To be honest, it had been business as usual for us all week. In every phase, I believe he has outperformed himself, and I couldn’t be happier with him, Coleman said. “I’m so proud of my horse and my team and everyone involved with this program. I’ve had him since he was four and produced him myself and it’s cool to see him go in there and rise to the moment.”
The team’s leaders, Lauren Nicholson and Vermicular, finished in 19th place overall with a final individual score of 41.1. Following their impressive cross-country performance yesterday, the pair added 8.4 to their total despite finishing just outside of the ideal time with two down.
“He gave it his all for me there. At the end of the course, we managed to take care of the two who had caused a lot of people problems, but he feels fine after this week. This track was very challenging. It’s incredibly technical and a true show-jumping track. He felt terrific and jumped beautifully, so all in all, I’m pretty pleased with him.
Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg TSF, a 2007 Trakehner gelding owned by Christine, Tommie, and Thomas Turner, struggled in a phase known for being difficult. The team’s final score of 41.2 placed them in 20th place overall after they dropped four rails and racked up a total of 16 faults.
Martin talked about the sense of togetherness among the squad and the gap between the U.S. program’s last team podium at a world championship and how much enthusiasm and excitement he can sense as the program looks to the future.
“Today, I’m extremely happy to be an American. The fact that we had five flawless rounds in the cross-country yesterday was fantastic and based solely on these results, any three of the five of us could have won a team medal, remarked Martin. Olympic fans can buy Olympic Tickets on our website.
It’s a huge relief since I’ve been a part of many of these teams and we’ve always been so close. I’m incredibly appreciative of this team and happy to have these guys seated next to me.
As the last combination to contest the course, Tamie Smith and Mai Baum, a 2006 German Sport Horse gelding owned by Alex Ahearn, Ellen Ahearn, and Eric Markell, added eight faults to their original score of 24.0 to finish on a 32.0, to take ninth place individually.
Smith, while disappointed to be out of the individual medal running after her round, said the focus was always on the team result and their overall performance throughout the week meant more than an individual medal.
“We came here to give it our all, and I have to say, I believe we’re pleasantly surprised. We’re less than a point off of third, which speaks volumes about the caliber of the field and the riding. It’s amazing, and I feel incredibly honored to be here,” Smith said.
“My horse makes me very proud. It seems to me that it simply wasn’t meant to be, and that’s okay. We’re here because we won the silver medal, which is why we came. I have to put the fact that this isn’t about my achievement but rather the team’s success in the background because I’m thrilled with our outcome.
Ariel Gerald (Southern Pines, North Carolina) stated yesterday that she wanted to finish the competition on her dressage score of 32.5, and she succeeded in doing so. Gerald led Annie Eldridge’s 2009 Irish Sport Horse gelding Leamore Master Plan to a flawless clear round inside the allotted time while astride the magnificent steed.
Gerald believed that her first championship appearance for the United States was her chance to establish her rightful place on the international scene while also soaking up all the information she could to better equip herself for the future.
“He’s such a terrific show jumper, so I was a little concerned going in. I simply need to have faith in him and know that he’ll try, and I knew he was good after the first fence. Because of his enormous step, the combinations can be challenging for him, but kudos to my horse.
It puts a lot of pressure on me to give him a solid ride since I would have to screw up as his jockey for him to fail to jump clear. He is unquestionably brilliant. I wanted to finish my dressage score, and we did, so that’s all you can ask for. I couldn’t be happier for him.
